In This Land

I used to dream of a far removed land
    Whose faces were ever-changing
As the roiling, shifting sands of the Arabian Desert
While it whips about, stinging my senses with a crude lack of care.

And I used to wish for this land
This land which remains as nameless to me now
As it did in my naive eyes so long ago
When the clattering tattoo of horses' hooves would assault my ears
And the lightly salted sea breeze would caress me gently
And the crushing fear of the bloodthirsty dragon crippled me
    All in the same night.

The land held many wonders to be sought
By heroes and dastardly villains alike
Who as you know often enjoy neighbouring lairs
So as to plot their dramatic novels together quite easily
And pull them off without a hitch.

In this land can be found
    A good many seas
Near which I may often be found
    Exploring dream-caves
Where the briny air leaves a heavy feeling in my chest.

And the greenest meadows line this land's valleys
Where the grass looks to be and endless sea and feels like it too
Until you meet the towering mountains
Whose heights are impossible to gauge.

But of course I've been to the roof of this land
And felt the bittersweet sun's rays
Like the sweetest candy and the darkest chocolate
    Through little to no atmosphere
    And munched on the tasteless
    Yet cotton-candy clouds.

And I've been through this land's dankest castle dungeon
Or through its most luxurious ball room
    As the guest of honour
    Of course.

And this land's rulers I've seen
The good kings of friendlier countries
And the wicked warlords of cold foreign climes
    And the beautiful princesses
    And handsome princes
All of whom spark an intense heart-clenching feeling of adventure.

And I've believed in this land
As well all often do when we are young
    And I've woken up disappointed
    Many a night
When I could no longer sense the smooth leather
Of a sword's handle beneath my palm
Nor feel the wind beneath me as I ride my flying carpet
    Through midnight skies
    Nor taste the metallic blood
Or smell the sweet fresh air the thought of which makes my head light
And which puts the cities and factories when I wake
    To deep deep shame.

    And I miss the land
Where a peasant can become a king
A woman a sword bearing hero
A knight can become a humble farmer
And where I can dream my wildest dreams
    And have them come true
    Before my astounded eyes
    In the sweltering sandy dunes
    The freezing arctic cold
    And the comfortable spring breeze.

    But I awake every morning
With no land of fantasy or heroes or dragons to see
    For miles around.

And I used to dream of this far removed land and I used to wish for its wonders.

Author's Comments

Written for an English assignment. It was only supposed to be around 50 words, but stretched to 479. Or so. Does it even count as a freestyle poem anymore? Yeah, I think so. Not prose?

Eh, like I said. It was a class assignment. I don't particularly like it (I don't dislike it, but I'm not ecstatic), but I thought I'd share.

"Hah, I can fly an you can't!
A natural airman, incase you hadn't noticed!
And in conclusion, I'd like to add that
I'm a girl and you can all get stuffed!"

"Why is the world covered in two-thirds of water?"
"I don't know."
"Why it is covered in water?"
"Shut up."
"I wonder how water was created?"
"Now, I have to use the washroom."
"Works everytime."

I always love your poems and this one is no exception!

You always have a lovely rhythm (sp?) to them and the subject is brilliant.
